Evaluation:

What was your initial concept for your final project and what were the reasons behind your choices?

My initial concept for my triptych was not actually domestic violence. Originally I was going to a triptych about the issues surrounding beauty standards in the media industry. The main reason I didn’t go with the idea was because it was quite hard to come up with a triptych that portrayed my message in an effective but more importantly in an original way. That is why I chose domestic violence from a male point of view as that is something that is not shown in the media and is something I feel strongly about.

How has your research and planning helped you develop your final project?

The research was probably the most important aspect of whole project. I researched different adverts, both still and motion, to form a fuller and a more developed understanding of the issue. I researched different triptych designers such as Adde Adesokan to see the different variations of triptychs. Another part of the research that I found extremely useful was researching the designers such as Sagmeister and Walsh. This was useful as it highlighted a more modern interpretation of different issues.

Who would be the audience for your media product?

My audience is quite broad. Although my triptych implies an abusive teen relationship, domestic violence is something that could happen at any stage and age of a relationship. Overall, I want my triptych to effect anyone who sees it. I do want to target males in the hope that this triptych gives them an outlet.

How did you attract/address your audience?

The main way I have addressed my audience and grabbed their attention was to make the male the vulnerable one in the relationship. That is not something that is regularly shown in the media so I wanted to highlight that there are two people in a relationship, not just the female.

What have you learnt about media technologies from the process of constructing this product?

I have learnt a vast range of Photoshop skills. Some that I found extremely useful were the clone stamp tool, crop tool, sponge tool and the pen tool. These were some of the more recent skills we developed and when put into practice were very useful in helping me produce an effective and professional looking triptych.

How closely did your final product resemble your initial ideas and expectations?

My final product did resemble my initial ideas, however, I did have to make some changes. For example, I changed which side the male and female were placed due to how I took my photos. I also added text to help portray the message. I did want it be a more implied, ‘read between the lines’ message but without the text it would have been confusing and unclear to the audience.

Research Evaluation:

These were my questions:
  1. Do you think men being abused in relationships is something we talk about in society?
  2. Do you think domestic violence is underrepresented in the media?
  3. Could you name a domestic violence charity or support group off the top of your head?
  4. Do you think it’s just women that are affected by domestic violence?
  5. Do you think it’s easy for men to speak about their issues in a relationship?
These were my results:

For question 1, the overall answer was unanimous and all answered no. This highlighted that male domestic violence is highly underrepresented in society and is something I would aim to change.

For question 2, overall most answered yes apart from 2 people. This shows that again media doesn’t discuss important issues. We are so heavily involved with irrelevant topics when clearly we should be focusing on topics like domestic violence.

For question 3, most answered no again apart from 2 people. This shows me that we as a society do not have a developed understanding about charities and helplines available. With the outlets not being clear, people don’t know how to get the help they are in desperate need of.

For question 4, no was the unanimous answer. This answer was a step in the right direction and made it clear that issue I am trying to raise is clearly one we need to raise awareness for.

Lastly, for question 5 the unanimous answer was no. This again shows that this is something that we need to discuss more in media and in adverts. The more openly we talk about it, the more comfortable people (especially men), will feel talking about it and getting the help they are in desperate need of.

I used a small focus group of 10 people so my results were limited. Next time, I will use a larger group to get more varied results. My results were quantitative as I only asked closed questions to come to a conclusion quicker and easier.

Production Evaluation:

There was quite a lot in my production process that I wasn't very happy about. However, I am glad I made these mistakes now in my first assignment so I don't make them next time. For example, I didn't have enough time to prepare my models so they were not dressed how I would have ideally wanted them to be. Next time, I want to have chosen my models and given them details about what to wear a week before the photo shoot. I also need to have my model release forms ready before i shoot instead of trying to locate my models post photo shoot.
